Can You Use a Thermal Scope During the Day?
Yes, thermal scopes can be used during the day because they detect heat, not light. Thermal vision devices work by converting infrared radiation into a visible image, picking up heat signals emitted by objects and living beings. This allows them to “see” things that are warm, like people or animals, even when it’s bright outside.
Some thermal imagers, such as our C8 Night Vision Monocular Thermal Imager Scopes, are not affected by light and perform equally well during the day or at night. However, the sun can heat up objects around you, which can lead to false positives. For example, rocks, ant hills, tree stumps, and downed trees can all heat up to a similar temperature. Some devices have lens caps that reduce the amount of light entering the objective lens, while others can switch between daylight and night vision modes.
Thermal vision devices can be used for a variety of purposes, including counting birds, observing volcanic eruptions, and extending the use of daytime optics.
