What is Night Vision?
Night Vision, or Image Intensification (I2) Technology, amplifies existing low-light conditions to produce a visible image. It uses an image intensifier tube to gather ambient light through the optic’s lens, process it electronically, and display it on a screen in the eyepiece. Modern night vision devices typically use Generation 3 technology, with higher generations and specifications generally providing better image quality. The image is usually displayed in green or white.
How does night vision work?
Night vision amplifies existing light, so it requires at least some ambient light to function. In complete darkness, an Infrared (IR) Illuminator is often used. This emits IR light invisible to the naked eye but detectable by night vision devices. Most binocular night vision devices include a built-in IR Illuminator.
Are Night Vision Goggles Legal?
Night vision goggles are legal in most U.S. states. California has partial restrictions, so residents should check local regulations before purchasing or using these devices.
Can light damage night vision tubes?
Yes, exposure to bright light can damage night vision tubes. Avoid using the devices in daylight or looking at bright light sources unless they’re equipped with gated tubes. Generally, if you can see clearly without the device, it’s too bright for safe use.
What's the difference between night vision and thermal imaging?
Night vision requires some ambient light to function, while thermal imaging detects heat signatures and works in complete darkness. Thermal imaging performs equally well day or night, which contributes to its higher cost compared to night vision.
Can night vision see through glass?
Yes, night vision can see through glass. In contrast, thermal imaging cannot penetrate glass surfaces.
What is an IR Illuminator and do I need one?
An IR Illuminator projects infrared light, invisible to the naked eye but detectable by night vision equipment. It’s useful in very low-light conditions. Many night vision devices include a built-in IR Illuminator, typically designed for short-range, flood-light style illumination suitable for close-range and indoor use.
